Making the Hard Choices

As military spouses, we have experiences that many couples do not.
One of those experiences is estate planning.
It's not often that a couple in their mid-20's (Okay, late-20's) has to sit down and make the hard choices. But due to the nature of the job, we do.

{I didn't plan on writing this post, because I considered it a private matter between Al and myself. But after further thought (and encouragement from Al to get your input) I've decided that having a discussion would probably help me get some more perspective.}

When Al and I started talking about life insurance, health care directives and POA's, it quickly became a more difficult discussion then I anticipated.
Obviously, prior to our marriage, his father was his beneficiary and acting POA.
And he wants it to stay that way.

Well, not entirely. I'm still his beneficiary for life insurance because he wants me to be "taken care of." I don't really care about the money, but it's a comforting thought.
His dad will remain his POA and in charge of any and all health care decisions that may come up.

My first instinct was anger. Which was really just masking my hurt.
I'm his wife, shouldn't I be the one to make those decisions?
Doesn't he trust me to do what's right for him?

Al: "Let me pose a scenario. I am shot in Afghanistan and I'm unable to authorize a surgery. The doctor tells you there is a 50% chance it will save my life and my quality of life will not be compromised. But there is also a 50% chance I will survive only as a vegetable or mentally and physically handicapped. What do you decide?"
Me: "To take the chance and try to save your life."
Al: "That's why I don't want you making the decision."
Me: "What? You'd rather die?"
Al: : "If the odds are 50% that I'm going to be a vegetable, then yes. And you will make the decision as an emotional, loving wife. It will be harder for you to abide by my wishes. My father can handle it."
Me: "So you don't think I can handle making the right decision when the time comes?"
Al: "I don't want you to have to any worry about it. As far as I'm concerned the decision is already made. I don't want to be resuscitated, I don't want to stay on life support, I only want life-saving devices used if the odds are better then 50% that I will live a normal life."

I sat there for a minute, unsure what to think. He's looking out for me, sure. But I still feel ripped off. I married him. I want the privilege of being a part of his life, good and bad. As excruciatingly hard as those decisions would be, I still feel like I should make them.
I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. I was frustrated, scared, hurt.

Al: "I never, ever want to put you in a situation where you're taking care of me, wiping my ass, pushing my wheelchair, feeding me mushy food. I love you too much to do that to you. And I don't want that life either."
Me: "I'm not worried about that. In sickness and in health, remember?"
Al: "I live for your happiness. I want to make sure that you can continue on and have a life. I want you to move on, get another husband, have lots of babies. I don't want you wiping my butt for the rest of your life. I'd rather be dead."

Once the smoke cleared (and the tears stopped) we agreed to create a joint POA.
It's only logical that I be able to apply for credit, deal with a lease or bank account or make other day-to-day decisions in his absence. It is also logical that his father maintain some of that authority also. After all, Al has some investments in Minnesota, and some finances tied to the farm and his family and it only makes sense that his dad is the best person to handle those things.

As for the medical decisions. For now they will stay as they are.
I'm still torn. For a couple of reasons:
1) My need for control and 2) My "legal-brain."
In law school, you're taught that contracts and legal documents are vital. So many people get screwed because they "trusted" someone to do the right thing in their absence and for one reason or another, that person doesn't.

Sure, it is extremely unlikely his father would do anything to hurt me or screw me over.
Even now, he calls me over minor documents and everyday decisions. He respects me and my position in Al's life. And ultimately I know that if a major health decision needs to be made, we'd all be sitting together, as a family, discussing it.

But I can't shake that feeling. No matter how much you love and trust the people in your life, you have to legally cover your butt.
Perhaps that makes me paranoid. Perhaps I should just trust everyone, no matter what.
Perhaps I should not expect the worst. Except I'll be the one sitting here fighting the battle if (as remote as the chance may be) things don't go as planned.

But none of my concerns or fears really matter. None of them trump Al's wishes.
Ultimately, that's what matters here. The underlying reason why I want this role is because I love him. It's because I want him to be happy, in life, in sickness and in death.
But why does that have to go against my gut instincts and push me out of my comfort zone?

Has anyone had the same dilemma?
How have you and your spouse handled these decisions?
I welcome any advice, commiseration or opinions you can share with me.

Army Wives: Another Season?

I just finished watching the finale of Season 5 of Army Wives.

First off: I LOVED this episode.
Purely fantastic.

But I kind of feel like it's over.
The entire series, not just the season.
And I feel like that's OK.

I feel content that the story and the characters were resolved.
They ended much like the came in: all of them, loving a supporting each other, enjoying the ceremony of the Army life, and hopeful that the future holds beautiful things for all of them.

Really, what's left?
Do they need to do any more?

Sure, there are some questions.
Even General Holden asked what the future holds for them.
But isn't that how Army life is?
You don't always know. You don't know where you're going or what life has in store at the next post, or the next tour, or even after the Army.

To me, tonights episode was the perfect amount of love, pride, family and uncertainty that the real Army life provides. To me, the show has completed its mission.

{Of course, I'll probably tune into Season 6. It IS Army Wives after all. They did say it would blow us away.}

Friends

(found here)

I'm making friends as best I can down here.

I've met both Jessica and JG in person {who are awesome, by the way!}
And I met another girl that is from my home state and located me through my sister so she'd have someone down here to hang out with. She is also great.

Finally, I've met the wives of some of the guys in Al's troop at the first FRG meeting.
I haven't spent enough time with them yet, but I have a volunteer meeting this week and another event so hopefully I can get to know them more.

The problem: Al can't hang out with a single one of them.
OK. He can hang out with the wives, but not their husbands.

{Most of them are officers because I haven't found very many NCO wives who are enjoyable women. The NCO wives that I've met are nice enough, they're just not my kind of people. (Judge me if you'd like, but being a hard-working, educated woman with no kids I don't have a lot in common with jobless SAHM. And to be clear, there are many SAHMs that are awesome, intelligent and interesting. In fact, many of my favorite blog ladies are just that. But I can't seem to find any of them in real life.)}

Then there are Al's friends. There is one guy Al has been friends with since boot-camp and I really like him and his wife. And there is one engaged guy who's fiance isn't in town yet.
Other then that, they're a bunch of single idiots who I really don't want spending time in my house. Apparently there are 3 more couples that he likes to spend time with, but I haven't met them yet. Hopefully soon!

Which leaves us with very little to choose from when it comes to having people over. Tonight, we're making teriyaki kebabs (YUM!) and invited people to join us.
Some of them are busy and unable to make it, but our list was short to begin with.
Everyone I want to hang out with can't even be invited and all the people he would normally hang out with aren't guys we want in our home.

I'm going to write-up another post later discussing that dreaded regulation that makes this so complicated: FRATERNIZATION.
In the meantime, I've got to clean my house, make another Wal-mart run and start making up appetizers (Caprese, Shrimp cocktail, Spinach dip, etc...) and hope HOPE hope that someone shows up tonight.

At this rate, we have one guy joining us which means we have WAY too much food and uneven teams for Apples to Apples.
Anyone in the neighborhood is welcome to join if you're hungry (and of course fit in the requisite group of people Al's allowed to be friends with, pfft!)

Do-Over: It's the little things...

I'm linking up with Mrs. S and her weekly meme.

Remember this mirror?

I was trying to figure out where I wanted to hang it in my house and the other weekend, I figured out a great way to incorporate it into my living room design.
But first, I had to take these frames:
And spray paint them with the same paint.

Then take some of my black frames, fill them all with pictures, and cluster them on the wall.
In order to choose the layout, I cut paper to the same size and shapes of the frames and positioned them on the wall where I wanted them.
Then I hung the frames accordingly.

I'm still tweaking and adding to it. I am looking for a great oval/circle frame to put in the open space on the right. I have a 3-fer frame that I'm going to incorporate also, but I haven't decided where. In the meantime, I'm pretty happy with the mix of clean black with the textured neutral and the overall layout.

Head over to Mrs. S.'s blog and show off your skills too!

Visiting Ft. Carson

You may remember that Al and I received PCS orders for Ft. Carson, CO. Since we are together (and only a 6-hour drive from Ft. Carson) for the summer, we thought we'd visit and check out the digs. We'd like to tour post, check out the surrounding neighborhoods and, of course, have some fun.

We're thinking of doing it over father's day weekend since Al gets a 3-day and we don't have to worry about any other obligations that weekend. Problem is: we're not really sure where to start. Actually, I'm not sure where to start. Al probably figures we'll just wing it and figure it out as we go. I'm not that flexible.

I'm reaching out to my lovely mil-spouses that are stationed at Ft. Carson.
I would love to know the basics: good off-post neighborhoods for living; the best restaurants and shopping; and what we need to know about Colorado Springs and Ft. Carson. If you could reply in the comment section, or send me an email (listed to the right) I would greatly appreciate that!

After all, that's what the mil-spouse community is for, right?!

Fashion Poll

In fashion, one day you're in and the next day, you're out.
{OK...so I borrowed that Project Runway, but it seemed fitting.}
We all know that fashion "fads" come and go.
And certain "runway looks" don't always translate to real-life bodies or real lifestyles.

That's probably even more true where I'm from.
Minnesota isn't a state where being fashion-forward is well-received.
It's not that people aren't open-minded or willing to try new things. It's just not the fashion capital that LA or New York is and us Mid-westerners don't like change all that much.

I would love to try some of the newer fashions, but I don't have the guts to break the mold when I'm not sure the rest will follow in my great state of Minnesota. There are a couple of trends in particular that I find intriguing, but I'm not sure if the "real world" is wearing them. Or if even the most fashion-forward of the regular folks are wearing them. So, help me out.

Tell me what you think about these trends: if you love them, hate them, tried them once or twice or have been dying to try them. Tell me if you think I'd like them or how they will look on me. Finally, give me any of your tips on how to wear them and where to get the best deals!
