It means cardboard in German. Not very exciting, I know. But for me, it has extra special meaning.
Quite a few months ago, while struggling through yet another long-distance phone conversation the word came up. We were discussing each other, or rather the qualities we liked in each other. (Sometimes quality affirmation is all you have when you can't kiss each other goodnight.)
I rattled off the list of things I loved about him (funny, hard-working, etc...) but he was having trouble putting his into words.
And then he said this: "You're my cardboard. When my table is a little lopsided, or I'm feeling a little uneven, you're the piece of cardboard I put under it to balance it out." (I'm paraphrasing.)
Not going to lie, I thought it was romantic as hell.
